"Pets" by Matt Cox

After some of the kind words I received with the release of Bandits earlier this month, I’ve been encouraged to share another track from my down-home stuck-in-the-mud Covid sessions. This may seem a bit unusual compared to my previous recordings, so I’ll offer you this rather wordy explanation if you like.

As a kid in the early 90’s I spent a lot of time watching MTV (120mns, Alternative Nation, Head Bangers Ball) and “Pets” by Porno For Pyros was, and still is, one of my favorite songs and music videos of that era. I first heard Perry Farrell when my brother, introduced me to Jane’s Addiction’s Ritual de Habitual in 1990. When I was 14, or so, we went on a family vacation to Colorado, and whatever little mountain town we were staying in had an even littler record store, and I bought the first Jane’s album there, as well as the self-titled Porno For Pyros, with “Pets”. I burned through a lot of batteries listening to those songs with my headphones on that trip, and it’s standard mountain music to me now whenever I’m lucky enough to revisit those kinds of places. I think it was the line about dinosaurs that first really got to me, or the humble notion of us all just being pets in the universe. I’m still hoping aliens will come and teach us how to treat each other some day. Anyways, here’s a reimagined version of that song…
